COLLEGE FOOTBALL ASHEVILLE CITIZEN-TIMES ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE igers rip E4 SUNDAY, NOV. 23, 1997 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COLUMBIA, S.C. Nealon Greene's three touchdown passes lifted Clemson to 47-21 victory over South Carolina Saturday night and may have landed the Tigers in the Peach Bowl. Clemson Clemcnr. 47 (i-V was 21 see if the Bowl Alliance chose North Carolina along with ACC champ Florida State.

South Carolina also had to win, but with a Motor City Bowl rep watching got handed its worst loss in the series since 1989's 45-0 Clemson victory. The Tigers scored their most points against South Carolina since winning 51-0 in 1900. It also kept alive a recent, yet quirky, rivalry fact that no home team has won in eight years. Greene did what he could to keep that going. He finished 12 of 15 for 157 yards and set a Clemson record with 16 touchdown passes this year, breaking Mike Eppley's 1984 mark of 14.

Tailback Raymond Priester, Clemson's all-time leading rusher, finished with 112 yards, his third 100-yard game this year, and showed he was mostly recovered from an ankle injury that has bothered him the past month. Early, though, it was South Carolina's Troy Hambrick, starting for injured tailback Boo Williams, who broke out. He had touchdown runs of 54 and 35 yards and piled up 109 yards in the first quarter. That's more than Clemson's defense -ranked fourth in the country against the run (79 yards) normally gives up all game. Hambrick had 135 yards total but only three in the second half.

The Gamecocks and Hambrick were pounding again just before the half, when Hambrick threw the ball away on a reverse and safety Chad Speck recovered on Clemson's 25. Greene led a minute-long, 75-yard drive, completing four passes, the last a 7-yard strike to Wofford in the end zone to cut the lead to 14-13. Georgia Tech 37, Maryland 18 ATLANTA Joe Hamilton had another outstanding game, throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns to lead Georgia Tech to a 37-18 victory over Maryland on Saturday, giving the Yellow Jackets enough victories to qualify for a bowl game. Tech (6-4. 5-3) clinched a tie for third place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Virginia but may need a victory next weekend In the regular-season finale against No.

14 Georgia to earn a bowl Invitation. Up to six ACC teams may qualify for the postseason. Scouts from the Peach, Carquest and Motor City bowls attended the game at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Tech is seeking its first bowl trip since the Aloha In 1991. Maryland (2-9, 1-7) closed out a dismal first season under coach Ron Vandertinden.

Hamilton has been brilliant In Tech's last three games, completing 60-of-77 (78 percent) for 896 yards and six touchdowns. He also has rushed for 130 yards, giving him 1,026 yards In total offense. 15 in September and thought to have the stuff to challenge Florida State and North: Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference this year. But the Tigers needed a win against their archenemy to even think postseason. And it took Greene, a senior quarterback facing his last game, to bail Clemson from a 14-3 deficit in the first quarter with TD throws of I yards to Brian Wofford and 15 yards each to Tony Home and Mai Lawyer.

Home added a 39-yard punt return score and Antwan Edwards, who had two interceptions, ran one back from 42 yards out to crush the Gamecocks (5-6). Clemson would make its third straight bowl appearance. The Tigers hit the Peach a year ago, accepting the invitation two days after losing to South Carolina. Robert Edwards rushed for 180 yards, scoring once and setting up Georgia's other two touchdowns, as the No. 14 Bulldogs maintained a shot at the Southeastern Conference title with a 21-14 victory over Mississippi on Saturday. Georgia (8-2, 6-2 SEC) scored on its first two possessions, taking the lead for good when Edwards broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and scored from 10 yards out to make it 14-7 late in the first quarter. The Bulldogs, who play at Georgia Tech in their regular season finale, will pull for Tennessee (9-1, 6-1) to lose to Vanderbilt next weekend. That would force a three-way tie in the SEC East, which Georgia would win on the strength of its'1 37-17 victory over Florida.

Ole Miss (6-4, 3-4), still in the chase for its first bowl game since 1992, closes its regular season next weekend at No. 15 Mississippi State. Stewart Patridge set Ole Miss single season records for completions (208) and yards (2,433) while completing 33-of-43 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. Patridge's second touchdown pass was a 35-yarder to Cory Peterson, who caught a tipped pass between a host of defenders and teammates on the final play of the game to make the score more respectable. That late Ole Miss score made -Olandis Gary's second TD run, a 9-yarder midway through the second quarter, more important After the Bulldogs converted a third-and-5 on Mike Bobo's 18-yard pass to Hines Ward, Edward had runs of 14 and 4 yards to the Ole Miss 9.

Gary then took an inside handoff and got into the end zone virtually untouched for a 21-7 lead. Georgia had missed a scoring chance on its previous drive when Mitch Baker blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt by Dax Langley. Holder Drew Cronic got a high snap placed on the ground, but not quick enough to prevent the block. The Bulldogs scored first for the ninth time in 10 games, after Edwards had four straight carries for 51 yards. His second carry was a 37-yard effort to the Ole Miss 22 before he was run out of bounds by Ronnie Heard.

Three plays later, Gary broke away from Heard at the line of scrimmage and scored from 11 yards out Ole Miss, which outgained Georgia 414 total yards to 406, needed just six plays to respond, Patridge threaded a pass between two defenders for a 24-yard TD pass to L.J. Taylor. While Patridge had his eighth 200-yard passing game, also a single-season Ole Miss record, Bobo had his second-lowest passing total of the season. Bobo hit 12-of-23 passes for 158 yards. John Avery had his fifth 100-yard rushing effort in the last six games for Ole Miss, with 114 yards on 20 carries.

He also had a game-high eight receptions for 40 yards. Arkansas 17, No. 15 Mas. St 7 FAYETTEV1L1E, Ark. CHnt Stoemer directed two touchdown drives that consumed almost 14 minutes as Arkansas beat No.

15 Mississippi State 17-7 Saturday, putting a crimp In the Bulldogs' hopes for a trip to the Southeastern Conference championship game. Arkansas, one of the worst offensive teams in the SEC, went 91 yards In 17 plays and then traveled 78 yards in nine plays for a 14-0 halftime lead. At that point, Mississippi State (7-3, 4-3) had two first downs. The Bulldogs win represent the Western Division In the SEC title game only LSU and Auburn lose next week. Ontrala Moss made two Interceptions lor Arkansas (4-6, 2-5), which had lost ve straight.

The Bulldogs had won four In a row. Todd Latourette's 25-yard field goal made ft 17-0 with 13 minutes to play. Moss set up the Held goal when he lured Matt Wyatt Into trying a throwback pass to James Johnson out of the backfield, and the defensive back Intercepted at the Bulldogs' 23. Add another amazing Iron Bowl to the history books. And cement Jaret Holmes' name Into the annals of Auburn-Alabama lore. The Auburn kicker nailed a 39-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining Saturday to give No. 13 Auburn an 18-17 come-from-behind victory over Alabama In a game that had seemed lost for the Tigers just moments earlier. With the win, Auburn (9-2, 6-2 Southeastern Conference) clinched its first SEC West title.

Despite its best effort of the season, Alabama (4-7, 2-6) finished with Its worst record since 1957. After nailing his fourth field goal of the night, Holmes pumped his fist and dropped to both knees, facing the student section as one of the loudest eruptions ever heard at Jordan-Hare Stadium erupted. Yet Incredibly, the game was not over. Alabama's Ed Scissum returned the ensuing squib kick 25 yards. A 15-yard facemask penalty brought the ball to the Auburn 40, but AJ.

Diaz's 57-yard field goal attempt fell well short and the crowd of 85,214 exploded again. The goalposts came down about 20 minutes later as Auburn improved to 4-0 at home against its fiercest rival. The Crimson Tide came In hoping for a low-scoring game and a few breaks and for 58 minutes the script went remarkably well.
